THE next EK Cruise has been cancelled in the wake of the shopping centre’s decision to halt the popular event. The organisers of EK Cruise have confirmed that the planned cruise event on Wednesday, August 4, will not go ahead on that date following discussions with the town centre management. As reported in the last edition of the East Kilbride Mail, bosses at the town centre concluded that: “the cruise has simply outgrown the town centre venue” following the mayhem and gridlock at the March rally. Organiser Mark Grimley agreed, putting the phenomenal turn-out in March down to the stellar reputation of the EK Cruise. Mark said: “We’re getting bigger and better every time and in March at the shopping centre we filled the full car park, upstairs and downstairs. “In 2008 we won the best cruise in the UK and at the moment we’re rated at second place overall, so our reputation precedes us.” Cruise organisers revealed that the search to find another venue is already on. Mark said: “We hope to continue to work with the centre management and police to find a more suitable location for the event which attracts over 2000 car enthusiasts from around the country to our town. “Finding another location in East Kilbride is obviously difficult due to the size of the event. “We apologise to all the enthusiasts who were planning to attend the event but the good news for the petrol-heads is we hope to have something in place soon.” Community Sergeant Barry McGinley said: “The latest EK Cruise in March was attended in large numbers that created an issue for police in terms of public safety. We are glad to hear that the organisation has taken the advice of town centre management and cancelled the event in August due to management concerns over public safety. We are more than willing to assist organisers in any way that would allow any future events to take place without any concern to the public or to those in attendance at the event.” The award-winning EK Cruise began four years ago and allows car enthusiasts to meet and show off their cars. Souped-up motors park up or cruise around the car park while people socialise and admire others wheels. Check the EK Cruise website for updates at www.ekcruise.com
