ImageA Big-hearted EK businessman has stepped in to help a local man with a debilatating disease.  Kevin Martin has donated a motion recliner chair to Alex Main, who suffers from Cauda Equina Syndrome (CES).
CES is an acute loss of function in the nerve roots of the spinal canal resulting, in Alex’s case, in paralysis from the waist down.
The chair – worth £1000 – provides great benefits to Alex, allowing him to sit up fully and to lie back flat, acting as a bed.
Alex said: “It is so comfortable, much better than my old chair.”
Alex’s family, from Westwood, held a fundraiser in order to buy the chair themselves. But Kevin stepped in after hearing about Alex’s plight.
Kevin - who runs an MoT and car repair centre in College Milton - said: “I just thought it was a disgrace in this day and age that a man would have to fundraise to buy something that would improve his quality of life.
“He has enough problems without having to raise funds for a chair.
Kevin added: “I was very touched by their story so I decided to buy the chair for them.”
The chair, which is remote controlled and has built-in heaters, is being called ‘Kevin’ as a tribute to his act of generosity.
Alex’s wife, Helen, told EK Mail of the moment Kevin revealed his surprise. She said: “We had a brilliant fundraising night at the Westwood function suite on  August 8.
“Kevin typed a letter out - which I’m going to frame - and handed it in.
“The DJ read it out and everybody was gobsmacked. Even the boys from B&Q were crying. I was bouncing about the hall.”
As the evening continued everyone was in high spirits. Helen added: “We were given nine special prizes for the raffle and sold two and a half books of tickets.”
The prizes included tickets for a tour of Celtic Park, and the Holiday Inn East Kilbride donated a meal for two with bed and breakfast.
All proceeds raised from the event will go towards future care for Alex.
Helen continued: “He is getting a wet room built downstairs and the rest of the money will be kept and used as and when he needs it.
“We are overwhelmed by people’s kindness and are so grateful for all the help and support from our friends, family and parishioners at Our Lady of Lourdes.”
