AFTER picking up form of late, East Kilbride Thistle threw away a two goal advantage at the weekend and, with it, three important points. The Jags donned an unfamiliar blue strip for the trip to Annbank on Saturday and the storm-like conditions were a precursor for what was to follow. The EK side dominated possession in the opening stages but struggled to finished well-worked moves with a goal. The best chance came from a Paul Woods’ free kick that was saved by the Annbank keeper. After 17 minutes, the home side began to pick up the pace and started to penetrate the East Kilbride defence and had a shot, which fortunately went wide of the mark. Only five minutes later, EK keeper Johnny Murdoch was quick to react to keep the side in it after a long ball cause a threat by the oncoming Annbank striker. However, the EK boys reacted to this and, on the counter, Stephen Chaplain’s cross fell to Paul Woods, sitting six yards out from the target. Woods’ shot looked to be heading wide before McClung stepped in to head the Jags one in front. Jordan looked to be having a howler of an afternoon. And keeper Murdoch was called on once again to keep the visitors’ lead intact. Murray Watson almost doubled the Jags’ lead five minutes before half-time when his close range effort was blocked by the Annbank keeper and sent over the crossbar. Thistle began the second half well, taking a second goal with Murray Watson again on hand to pressure the home keeper and, this time, get a result from it. However, after this, the Jags fell apart under the growing pressure from the home side, with Annbank getting the first of their four in the 62nd minute. Shortly afterwards, the scores were level and Thistle were struggling to keep up their form from the first half. With only 17 minutes left on the clock, the home side took the lead after they were awarded a penalty, which they converted. The late setback clearly affected the Showpark side and, as they tried to claw back an equaliser, were caught off guard as the home side made an attack and put themselves 4-2 ahead in stoppage time. This weekend the Jags have a break from league duties. They will take on Glentanar at the Showpark in the second round of the Fly Emirates Scottish Junior Cup. |
