EAST Kilbride MP Adam Ingram is used to being in the spotlight of power politics but a new TV docu-drama is about to catapult him into the limelight.Adam Ingram, the former armed forces minister, is to be portrayed in a Channel 4 programme about the late redoubtable Mo Mowlam, who was the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, where she and the East Kilbride MP were friends and political allies. The dramatisation ‘Mo’ will explore the life of one of Britain’s most admired politicians with Educating Rita star Julie Walters taking on the title role. Gary Lewis, of Billy Elliot and Gangs of New York fame, will play Mr Ingram and the East Kilbride politician counts his blessings that his mother won’t see the drama, because of the robust language Gary has to use in his portrayal of the armed forces minister. The MP, who is standing down this summer, said: “I was very privileged to be able to help the script and the production team with the documentary. “The movie is about Mo and how she survived a terrible medical condition to perform at such a high level in her all too short, but brilliant, political career. “The peace process is the backdrop to the drama and Mo Mowlam was a major contributor to bringing peace to Northern Ireland. “Julie Walters played Mo to perfection, managing to encapsulate all aspects of her personality. It was a substantial production and a fitting tribute.” Mo Mowlam was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour in 1997 and continued to work, choosing to tell everyone around her that it was benign. She resigned from Parliament in 2001 and died in 2005 at the age of 55, after a fall at her home. Mr Ingram attended a preview of ‘Mo’ at the BAFTA’s in London last night with a selected audience of critics. He admitted it would be “humbling” to see himself on screen. The programme will air on Channel 4 on January 31 at 9pm.
