PLANS for two major primary school revamps in East Kilbride have been given the go-ahead.Canberra primary school, in Westwood, is to be rebuilt and St Louise, in the Murray, will have a £3.2million refurbishment. Canberra and St Louise are set to benefit as a result of the South Lanarkshire Council’s primary school modernisation project. The £7.5million Canberra modernisation will be a tandem re-build – with the new school being constructed alongside the existing building so allowing pupils remain in their school until the new one is ready. The new look Canberra school will have nine classrooms, an assembly hall and and IT suite. The existing grass pitch will be relocated and a multi-use games area (MUGA) will be constructed. Councillor Gerry Convery, of EK Central South, said: “My constituents are delighted at the news, as am I. “The building is dilapidated and I welcome the building of a new school in which to educate the children of East Kilbride.” As well as the refurbishment of the St Louise building in Whitehills Terrace there will also be an extension – consisting of three classrooms – and another MUGA pitch. In order for work to begin, a purpose-built decant facility is to be constructed within the grounds of neighbouring Heathery Knowe primary school. Three temporary classrooms, an office and toilet facilities are to be built by April on the grassed area of Heathery Knowe school building. Councillor Graham Scott, Chair of the Planning Committee, said: “It is really satisfying for the members of this committee to be able to play a part in the Schools Modernisation Programme. Once again, we have before us proposals which will transform the learning experiences of many hundreds of children both now, and in the years to come. “I have no hesitation in welcoming today’s plans as very good news both for the school communities and the town of East Kilbride.”
