Revenue tight-lipped over rumours of boss's tax bill Print E-mail

ImageTHE HEAD of a department at the East Kilbride tax office is alleged to have left his high-profile post after accusations surfaced that he was bankrupted by his future employers – the Inland Revenue.
A top call centre manager at HM Revenue and Customs is believed to have been escorted from his Plaza Tower office by senior managers last week.
Speculation reached fever pitch in the Centre One tax office following the publication of a recent online article on the website of the satirical magazine Private Eye.
The article claims he was made insolvent just three months before he landed the job – advising customers on how to pay their tax bills – at one of HMRC’s largest call centres.
The HMRC call centre in East Kilbride was the first to be set up by the Inland Revenue.
The article claims the former call centre boss was made bankrupt by HMRC just three months before he was given the job in East Kilbride.
It is believed he appeared at Linlithgow sheriff court last March over £75, 545 in unpaid tax bills.
A HM Revenue and Customs spokesman told the East Kilbride Mail: “We cannot comment on any individual staff members.
“However, I can confirm that, although the details of an individual’s recruitment are confidential, we require applicants to inform us if they are insolvent and we make a decision based on the nature of the job they are being recruited for.
“We assess the risks posed by appointing someone who is insolvent, and the organisation’s ability to manage those risks.”
A worker at the Plaza Tower told the East Kilbride Mail on Monday that the senior manager was no longer in the building. A Centre One worker said yesterday: “It all came to light last Wednesday and he was escorted out the building.
“It’s astonishing that they didn’t look into his background and gave him such a high powered job.”
A spokeswoman for HMRC could not confirm their employee had been dismissed or suspended nor were they prepared to confirm that he was still operating from the East Kilbride office.
