ImageBIG-HEARTED South Lanarkshire College students have raised more than £800 for sick children.
Pre-Apprenticeship Construction Craft students took part in a sponsored walk to raise funds for ward 2b of Yorkhill Children’s Hospital in Glasgow.
The students walked around Strathclyde Country Park on February 4, and thanks to generous contributions of family and friends, managed to raise £805.
The event’s organisation was managed by the students as part of the citizenship skills section of their course.
The boys – all aged between 16 and 18 – chose the charity because their construction lecturer, Derek Brown, has connections to the hospital.
Mr Brown’s son, also Derek has had four major operations in ward 2b.
Mr Brown said: “Yorkhill hospital is a crucial organisation in the West of Scotland and it is important we try to assist its fundraising needs to ensure the smooth running of the hospital’s essential services.
“The students did a wonderful job in their fundraising, they were all keen to take part and showed enthusiasm for the event and the charity.”
Mr Brown and Derek visited the hospital with two of the students,   John Murphy, 17, from St Leonards and Gary Noble, 18, from Calderwood, to present the cheque.
Consultant paediatric surgeon Mr Carl Davis, who operated on Derek,  and the helpful staff from the ward received the bumper cheque on behalf of the hospital.
Mr Davis thanked the students personally as he showed them around the ward, and explained where the money would be used.
The consultant also stressed the importance of donations such as the one collected by the students and pointed out that Derek Brown’s son is a testament to all the equipment needed on the ward. Without donations, children across Scotland would be at a greater disadvantage, he added.
