A PROPOSAL to extend the life of the Cathkin landfill site has caused anger in East Kilbride. The site, north of East Kilbride, will be full in three years, while planning permission at Cathkin is also only valid until 2013. East Kilbride West Councillor Michael McCann has slammed Glasgow City Council’s plan to extend the life of the Cathkin site by 10 years and has vowed to be at the forefront of the campaign to stop this proposal. Stewartfield residents have long complained about the smell from site, debris falling off lorries and claimed it caused a plague of flies in the estate eight years ago. Councillor McCann said: “I am very disappointed that Glasgow City Council want to increase the life of the landfill site. “They know the original project was rejected by South Lanarkshire Council and the site was imposed upon us by the Scottish Office. They also know that my constituents have faced a variety of problems over the years coping with the site’s by-products. “I know waste management is a big issue. However, Glasgow City Council have had a long time to think about this site and devise a strategy that would avoid having to put waste into a hole in the ground in an area so close to people’s homes. “Likewise, they have known for some time that the public are opposed to a landfill site at this location. “I have no doubt whatsoever that my constituents will oppose the extension of the Cathkin Landfill site and I agree with them 100 per cent.” East Kilbride Councillor Graham Simpson is concerned and dismayed at Glasgow’s move. The Conservative Councillor said: “I know many people, particularly in Stewartfield, were looking forward to the existing landfill site – which has not been without its problems – being full in 2013. “To discover that it could be extended in size and in years to 2023 will come as a shock to residents. The important thing here is that we have a full and proper consultation, involving the people of East Kilbride. “As soon as plans are available, I would like to have a public meeting where residents can come and see them. I also want to hear people’s views from here on in. “There will be a lot for officials and councillors to consider here. It is a very sensitive green belt site and we must make sure we get it right.” Glasgow City Council’s waste management strategy, which was reported to their council’s executive committee last Friday, stated it intends to apply for planning permission from South Lanarkshire Council. At this stage Glasgow has not formally approached the SLC planners. A spokeswoman for South Lanarkshire Council said: “At this stage the plans are at a very early stage and no formal approach has been made. “We would anticipate that pre-application discussions will take place between Glasgow City and the planning service in the coming months.” A Glasgow City Council spokesman said: “The council is currently considering its options for landfill provision beyond 2013, when capacity at Cathkin is due to be exhausted and planning permission expires. “That process involves looking at whether we should seek to continue to operate our own landfill, at Cathkin or anywhere else.”
