The return of the big freeze got the better of the junior fixtures this weekend and East Kilbride Thistle’s home game with Girvan was called off late on.The match has been rescheduled for this weekend but its fate will again depend very much on the weather. EK manager Colin Mitchell is keen to see the game go ahead but knows they may have to wait until the end of the week to get the game confirmed. He said: “We did well to get our match with Glenafton on when most other fixtures were cancelled, but there was nothing we could do at the weekend. I was checking the forecast for this week and with temperatures of -6 and -8 over the next few days we will just have to wait and see come the end of the week.” Thistle have seen many of their fixtures cancelled throughout winter but the last two games have seen them hit a bit of form with a hard fought 0-0 away to Kilsyth Rangers and a 2-1 home victory over Glenafton. With a number of games in hand over the sides above them EK have a chance of pushing up the league when they play their postponed games. Mitchell believes his side have the quality to do so, but is taking nothing for granted: “We just have to take one game at a time. We have been in decent form in the last few games so it is frustrating to have games cancelled. “Some sides have played 16 games while we have only played 10, but I think it will be the end of March or the start of April before the league begins to take shape when teams are playing two or three times a week to catch up on all the postponements.” Thistle could begin climbing the table this weekend when a victory over fourth placed Girvan could potentially move them to sixth despite the relatively few league games they have played this season. This Saturday’s rescheduled fixture will be a 2pm kick off at the Showpark. |
