East Kilbride Thistle may have had their match against Girvan called off for the second week in a row, but manager Colin Mitchell used the break to cast his eye over potential new players.Thistle took the opportunity to arrange a friendly with Super League table toppers Beith in Irvine. The Ayrshire side ran out 3-0 winners, but it was not about the result for gaffer Mitchell, who said: “We started the game with the side that had beaten Glenafton 2-1 and the first half was very even, finishing at 0-0. “In the second half I made eight changes and decided to look at a couple of trialists who have been training with us for a couple of weeks. “I was pleased with how we played but Beith just proved too strong in the end.” The trialists Mitchell was taking a look at have good pedigrees and he hopes to tie up a couple of signings this week. He said: “James Miller has just left Stenhousemuir and Jordan Murch was recently released by Clyde. “They are two young players untested at junior level so I wanted to see them in a match and they impressed me a lot.” After a fortnight without a competitive game, Thistle will be in cup duty this weekend, weather permitting. The Jags are away to Thorniewood United of Uddingston on Saturday in the New Coin Automatics West of Scotland Cup second round. Thorniewood play in the league below Thistle and remain a largely unknown quantity to Mitchell: “With all the postponements recently I haven’t been able to see Thorniewood in action, so I don’t know much about them. “However, I know that they knocked Beith out in the first round of the cup, and after playing them at the weekend we know that they must be a good side to be able to beat Beith.” The choice of friendly would seem to have been the perfect preparation for the second round cup tie and Mitchell wants his side to have the best chance possible of progressing: “This competition is second only to the Scottish Cup so we want to do well in it and certainly wont be taking Thorniewood lightly.” |
